This September's event is flush with international and local legends alike

The 2016 Brisbane Festival, south-east Queensland's foremost celebration of all things creative, has truly outdone itself ahead of this year's annual event, having unveiled a legend-heavy international and local contemporary music line-up led by the likes of Sonic Youth co-founder Kim Gordon, veteran Aussie performer and Bad Seed Mick Harvey and — for the first time in 11 years, for one night only — celebrated Brisbane band george.

Adding to the roster's allure are local heroes Custard, Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster, rising chanteuse Montaigne (kicking off a national tour in support of her debut album), US singer-songwriter Kilo Kish, fellow Americans (and 15-piece 'little orchestra') Pink Martini, and a ream of stalwart favourites such as Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Jen CloherHolly ThrosbyDave Graney & The Coral SnakesDappled Cities and more.

"I'm really happy with our contemporary music program this year; some completely legendary names alongside some new artists who are really starting to make it big now," artistic director David Berthold said in a statement. "And, of course, to see these acts in the intimacy and fun of the Spiegeltent is just perfect."

Gordon, who will be supported by local rockers WAAX, will hit the stage on Tuesday 6 September (tickets this way), while george will make their eagerly awaited return with a celebratory 20th-anniversary appearance on Friday 9 September, the same night as Harvey's Intoxicated Man, a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg.
