Jurassic World Smashes Box Office Expectations And Sets Global Record

Looks like people really missed the dinosaur franchise.

It was expected to do well, but no one saw this coming.

The latest film in the Jurrasic Park franchise, Jurassic World, has smashed expectations at the box office during its opening weekend and subsequently has set a global record.

The film was tracked to open with a $125 million dollar opening, however that figure was blown out of the water when it was released to an estimated $511.8 million dollars within its first days in cinemas, making it the highest global opener of all time.

It has trumped the previous record set by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows — Part 2 which took in $483.2 million back in 2011.

The reason can be attributed to the film's release in China which counts for one fifth of Hollywood films global intake, and in most cases movies do not open in China on the same week as other countries.

Jurassic World is now also the second highest domestic (US) opening film of all time taking in $204.6 million, just behind 2012's The Avengers which holds the current record of $207.4 million — it is expected that at this rate, Jurassic World will beat that figure by tomorrow.

Jurassic World has not only revitalised the popular franchise, with it being the first installment since 2011, but talk has already commenced for a sequel with lead star Chris Pratt already signed on for more.

Interestingly, director Colin Trevorrow recently spoke in an interview about how he initially wasn't sold on Pratt as the leading man.

Jurassic World is in cinemas now.
