Sporting his iconic leather jacket and expertly gelled hair, John Travolta thrilled audience members and former co-stars alike by rocking up on Friday, June 27th, to a sing-along for Grease hosted at the Hollywood Bowl.
Travolta starred in the major movie musical in 1978 as leather-clad, swoon-worthy bad-boy Danny Zuko, alongside Aussie superstar Olivia Newton-John as his girl-next-door love interest, Sandy Olsson. The film was a smash hit and has been revered for its iconic musical numbers for decades.
As Travolta strolled onstage at the sing-along event, the crowd went wild, and the cast members onstage looked amazed. The cast-mates at the event included Barry Pearl (known for playing T-Bird Doody), Didi Conn (known for playing Frenchy), Kelly Ward (known for playing T-Bird Putzie), and Michael Tucci (known for playing Sonny LaTierri). The film’s director, Randal Kleiser, was also present.
On Instagram, the seventy-one-year-old Pulp Fiction star confirmed that he “surprised everyone,” and that “no one knew. Not even the cast.”
Travolta posted the heart-warming footage of the event to his Instagram page. Star fans are typing up a flurry in the comments section, with Oscar-Winner Michelle Pfeiffer commenting, “Oh, wish I were there!”

Grinning onstage, Travolta hugged his awed former cast members and delivered memorable lines from the musical into his microphone, joking, “LA? I thought you were going back to Australia…That’s cool, baby. You know, rockin’, rollin’.” Then, Travolta and his co-stars led fans in singing, “A-womp-bop-a-looma-a-womp-bam-boom,” the iconic line from the movie’s finale number, ‘We Go Together.’
Onstage, he urged fans to enjoy the show, beaming and saying, “We love you!”
This marks the first time that the Oscar-nominated star has reprised the role of his Grease character since the passing of Olivia Newton-John, who died of cancer in 2022, aged 73.
The available footage certainly indicates that this summer night at the Hollywood Bowl would have been one to remember.
