With the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) fast approaching, triple j Unearthed announced the winner of their annual competition to perform at the event: Jamahl Yami.

The Waanyi/Gangaliida rapper will perform at the 20th anniversary of the NIMAs on Saturday, 10 August, alongside Jess Mauboy, Dan Sultan, 3%, and other mob royalty.

Miss Kaninna, Arrkula Yinbayarra with Dr Shellie Morris AO, Birdz and Fred Leone, Eleanor Jawurlngali and Emily Wurramara will also join Yami on stage in Darwin.

Yami burst into the national spotlight with his debut single, Blood Majik, in March this year, garnering a whopping 39,000 streams and quite a few spins on radio.

Starting his career in Cairns’ Water Street, Yami will now face his largest audience yet at the NIMAs.

Previous winners of the competition include Baker Boy, JK-47, and Thelma Plum, who took out the Album of the Year award last year.

This year’s NIMAs are set to be huge, with the finalists announced earlier this month. The Kid LAROI and Barkaa lead with the most nominations for the night.

The Kid LAROI has been nominated for Album of the Year for his 2023 album, The First Time, and his single BLEED is up for the Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year categories. Meanwhile, Barkaa has also received nominations in three categories: Artist of the Year, and her song We Up will compete with The Kid LAROI in the Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year categories.

In a statement, Barkaa said of her three nominations, “So honoured to be nominated again this year for three NIMAS! It’s always such an honour to be recognised for your work especially when it’s from your people. Thankful to be nominated amongst my peers, my mob, my people. Blakfullas don’t just make Blak music, we make THE BEST MUSIC.”

Amazon Music returns as a sponsor for the NIMAs this year, which will air on NITV from 8 pm on Saturday, 10 August. You can find tickets on the Darwin Festival website to attend the award ceremony.
