It has been rumoured for some time that The X Factor Australia will not be returning in 2017 and in what could just be the final nail in the coffin, the show posted its lowest-ever ratings for a finale last night.
update: Even ‘X Factor’ Judge Guy Sebastian Isn't Surprised By The Show's Poor Ratings
Despite the singing competition's eighth season being taken out by talented indigenous singer Isaiah Firebrace, TV Tonight has reported that The X Factor finished third in its timeslot with a viewership of 751,000, behind ABC's 7.30 and Australian Story,
To make matters worse, the show finished in a disappointing 11th position in the Monday overnights.
It was hoped that this season would perform much better than previous outings due to the recruitment of US singer Adam Lambert and Sydney-born rapper Iggy Azalea to the judging panel.
"No question this season has failed to fire for Seven," TV Tonight's David Knox tells The Music.
"Despite a revamp in its judges, host and format — in part due to the Olympics interceding — it hasn't resonated in either Total People or Demographics."
Knox has supported speculation that The X Factor will not be brought back next year.
"Given the high costs for the show I can't see Seven going with a renewal in 2017 and their decision to discontinue Dancing With The Stars highlights demonstrates they won't be swayed by sentiment," Knox says.
The news comes just a day after former contestants of The X Factor alleged they were subject to brutal working conditions while on set.
