Eddy Current Suppression Ring are making their way to Sydney, where they’ll perform for the first time in over 15 years.

The cult Melbourne garage rockers are performing as part of Vivid Sydney’s free, popular Tumbalong Nights program at Darling Harbour. Eddy Current Suppression Ring will headline the stage on Friday, 12 June, for an increasingly rare live performance. They’ll be joined by Ethiopian-born, Melbourne-based Chikchika.

Last year, Eddy Current Suppression Ring played their first show in nine years and their first in Melbourne in 15 years, performing a free headline gig at Federation Square on AFL Grand Final weekend.

Having formed in the early ‘00s, Eddy Current Suppression Ring became a mainstay of the local Melbourne music scene, with their no-frills approach to rock emblematic of the city’s sound at the start of the millennium.

Following a self-titled record in 2006, 2008’s Primary Colours won the band the prestigious Australian Music Prize, before they effectively bade fans farewell with 2010’s Rush To Relax. Their last Australian show before the hiatus was a headline show at The Palace in Melbourne, followed by a few US shows that wrapped it all up.

A brief run of reunion dates in 2016 took place as part of Golden Plains and Dark Mofo, while 2019’s comeback album All In Good Time was planned to be followed by an Aussie tour, though a noted global pandemic led to its unsurprising cancellation.

Along with their reunion show last year, Eddy Current Suppression Ring dropped the new EP, Shapes And Forms.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring aren’t the only ones who have been added to the Tumbalong Nights program. Other newly announced acts include Dept, Chalky Wong, Gretta Ray (joining Matt Corby), and others. You can explore the full program here.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said of today’s announcement, “Vivid Sydney continues to deliver world-class cultural experiences that are accessible to everyone, and the strong demand for Tumbalong Nights shows just how popular free live music is with audiences.

“By adding more acts to the program, we’re giving visitors and locals even more reasons to come into the city, stay longer and support local businesses.

“Tumbalong Nights is a great example of how we can showcase incredible local and international talent while creating vibrant, inclusive spaces for people to come together and enjoy Sydney’s night-time economy.”
