Charli XCX has hit back at her detractors following her massive Glastonbury set on Saturday (28 June).
While she received a glowing five-star review from The Guardian as well as other accolades from music critics, there were still punters who criticised her use of autotune during her set.
Perhaps they were unfamiliar with Charli XCX’s work and had just stumbled upon her live-streamed on BBC iPlayer; maybe they didn’t believe she deserved a nighttime slot on a huge stage. Regardless, the sympathy is a knife singer didn’t mince her words when addressing her critics.

“like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a ‘real artist’ is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep,” she wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday (30 June).
She continued, “but to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable.”
Later, after thanking The Guardian for the five-star review, she added: “really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my glastonbury performance. it’s super fascinating to me.”
Charli XCX’s Glastonbury performance firmly spotlighted her breakthrough album, brat. She performed eleven tracks from the album, including 360, 365, Apple, Von Dutch, and Club Classics.
Her Glastonbury show marked a stark contrast from her Coachella performance in April. Where the former included zero special guests and showcased Charli’s pure star power, the latter included three special guests: Australian hitmaker Troye Sivan on the Talk talk remix, Lorde on the Girl, so confusing remix, and Billie Eilish for the Guess remix.
Bringing brat Summer Down Under, Charli XCX was this year’s headliner of Laneway Festival in Australia and New Zealand. She was joined by big-name artists including beabadoobee, Clairo, Remi Wolf, and Djo.
