The organisers of Big Day Out have scared the Queensland Government into committing to finding the festival a new Gold Coast venue after they claimed they were being forced out by the Government's commitments to the Commonwealth Games.
Today Queensland's Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey issued a statement today confirming that a deal had been reached that will see the festival re-located to a new venue in Gold Coast. The current Parklands is set to become the Commonwealth Games' athlete's village.
“This agreement lays to rest any speculation about the future of the Big Day Out not remaining on the Gold Coast,” Stuckey said. “My department has worked closely with the event's chief executive Adam Zammit to keep the event on the Gold Coast, and today's decision will let him proceed with selecting and securing a site for next year's festival.”
Zammit added, “We are relieved to have found a successful resolution with the Minister, who has worked tirelessly over the last few months to ensure Big Day Out stays on the Gold Coast. We hope to secure and announce a new location on the Gold Coast very soon.”
Earlier this week Zammit had gone on record, claiming the festival was being forced out by the authorities' “punishing commercial terms”.
Earlier today Big Day Out announced their full Chow Town menu and confirmed that Sydney's leg has sold out.
