Woodstock ’69 is widely regarded as one of the most historic events in music history, so it’s not surprising organisers are planning a massive 50th anniversary event for later this year.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, co-founder Michael Lang confirmed a three-day event featuring “an eclectic bill” will take place in New York from August 16 – 18.
“It’ll be hip hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival,” Lang said – and given the ’69 line-up featured The Who, Joan Baez, Santana, Canned Heat and stacks more, that’s an exciting prospect.
The line-up is expected to be announced when tickets go on sale next month, with more than 40 acts already confirmed to play across the festival’s three stages.
It’s also expected that “newer bands” on the bill will pay tribute to former Woodstock greats Janis Joplin, The Band, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker and more.
“Having contemporary artists interpret that music would be a really interesting and exciting idea,” Lang said.
“We’re also looking for unique collaborations, maybe some reunions and a lot of new and up-and-coming talent.”
