'I Thought Liam Was The Drug Dealer': The Man Who Found Oasis Is Hitting The Big Screen

"Oasis had intimidated the security [to get in the venue]."

Alan McGee - the man behind iconic label Creation Records and who discovered Oasis - is about to have his story told on the big screen.

Released last month in the UK and set to hit Australian cinemas on 15 April, Creation Stories tells the story of how the "young charismatic Glaswegian from humble beginnings, went on to sign generation-defining bands such as Oasis and Primal Scream".

Appearing on a new episode of The Green Room With Neil Griffiths podcast, McGee recalled discovering Oasis at Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in 1993 who fluked their way onto the stage without even being booked to play.

"I was downstairs having a drink, I was a bit pissed... Oasis had intimidated the security [to get in the venue]," McGee told host Neil Griffiths.

"The security came up to me and said, 'Can they play?' 'cause I had the other two bands [playing]... I was like, 'Whatever, just let the scallies go and play.'"

The scene is played out in great detail in the film, with McGee saying that Oasis played many songs from their critically-acclaimed 1994 debut album, Definitely, Maybe, to a near empty room.

"I thought Liam looked incredible, but I thought he was probably the drug dealer," McGee said.

"They started playing... I can't remember what order but they did Rock'n'Roll Star, Up In The Sky, Bring It On Down and I Am The Walrus

"At that point, I went to the sound guy who used to work for me... I said 'Go and get the manager.' No manager.

"'Go get the leader of the band' - Noel Gallagher comes out and says, 'Alright, mate?' And we talked and we got on really well."

McGee offered the Manchester band a record deal on the spot and following its release the next year, Definitely, Maybe became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK at the time.

Creation Stories sees Ewen Bremner (Daniel "Spud" Murphy in Trainspotting) portray McGee in the film, which is co-written by Irvine Welsh, directed by Nick Moran and executive-produced by Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle.
