After a successful launch in the US, Canada, and New Zealand, Spotify has confirmed the launch of its Prompted Playlist feature to Premium users in Australia.
Rolling out from Tuesday, February 24th, Prompted Playlist is launching in its beta form, with listeners being given the tools to create hyper-personalised playlists in seconds.
The idea behind Prompted Playlist is that all playlists are only as good as the humans behind it.
Listeners are asked to describe an idea, a mood, or a moment in simple, everyday language, which Spotify will then turn into a playlist. Utilising the user’s own listening history and current musical and cultural trends, the result is a collection of songs that meets the prompt and satisfies the listener’s own tastes.
To use the Prompted Playlist feature, Premium users need only to tap the Create button on their home screen, and select the nascent feature. From there, simply provide the vibe, scenario, or cultural moment you want to hear, and Spotify will generate the playlist from the idea.
As the streamer explained upon its launch in New Zealand, the request could be as simple as “music from my top artists from the last five years,” or more specific, including “high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for a cool-down” layered with a request to “include music from this year’s biggest films and most-talked-about TV shows that match my taste.”

“We hear from listeners all the time that they love playlists, but making their own can feel daunting,” Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial said last month. “Our editors spend a lot of time thoughtfully curating playlists, and that level of intention can be hard to replicate when you’re starting from scratch.
“Prompted Playlist offers a more intuitive entry point, letting users begin with moods, moments, or ideas in their own words, and build something that feels personal.”
Playlists generated by the Prompted Playlist can also be set to refresh daily or weekly to maintain sense of new discovery and musical exploration, while suggested prompts are also available for those unsure of just how to best utilise the new feature.
