Fresh Finds: Class Of 2025 – Aussie Acts To Add To Your Playlist

Slack: Home Bass.

Cut The Slack.

Slack plays Liquid Bass at the Jubilee Hotel on Saturday.

Melbourne Techno DJ Slack has been rocking our southern counterparts for many years, helping to establish and maintain the clubbing institution that is Teriyakianarkisaki. He’s venturing north with other Saki’n DeeDee to rip the roof of Liquid Bass this weekend.

How long have you been playing?

“I have been playing professionally for six years. I have collected records for many years, but even after Teriyaki began I waited a while until my playing standard was better before offering myself professionally.”

What's the philosophy behind your music?

“Well I'm not one to get too cosmic (although some of my friends may disagree with this when I'm just trying to relax drinking and smoking and all!), but I want people to have a good time... not the same time, and not always positive. It makes me personally want to take the safety off my 45 when I hear DJ's talk about positivity like a bunch of snivelling little Christians... It's a party... let go, try things, see what happens. Keep it interesting... not boring. Don't be afraid to fuck up.”

How's Teriyaki treatin you these days?

“Teriyaki is like having a wife! It's excellent because the people involved are as crass and ill-mannered as me, and I’m starting to learn how to relax as a host. Every week is a mystery.”

What's the best performance you've ever seen?

“I think it's my friend Chicken trying to lay an egg from his arse. But so much comes to mind. Techno wise: shit there's been a lot of great shows. The best things have happened at smaller events, when the right underground chemistry is there. Fuck the stars, We know what to do.”

What's your top five tracks at the moment?

“I really don't know the names of trax, and sometimes not even labels. I mostly follow producers. Recently I've liked records by: Lars Klein, Tobias Von Hofsten, Misjah, Danilo Vigorito, Shufflemaster, Chester Beatty, Henrik B, Ryan Rivera and Fredrik Almquist.”

What do you think of the Aussie tech scene? Who's kickin it for you?

“Aussie Techno needs to take the next step. A lot of techno has slowed worldwide right when local producers are getting it together. Local people need to get on with making their music as good as possible, because until recently the quality was inferior to overseas records, and I personally rarely played local techno because it sounded so inferior (I hate to sound cynical). The next year will still be challenging. Who knows?”

Are you moving into production, writing bangin tunes?

“Yep. Still trying to finish good things, and live up to what I was just talking about. It's tough keeping it together, and having creative time to finish disciplined work. Hopefully next time I come to Brisbane I can have a bloody record in hand!”

If you could make any one person the Pope, who would it be?

“David Lee Roth.”
