Rising First Nations artist ICONYX has released her debut album, Blak On Trak. This album marks a milestone in her career as a young artist, showcasing her powerful voice, cultural heritage, and unique perspectives, all while navigating the world without sight.

Blak On Trak is a fusion of hip-hop, R&B and contemporary music. ICONYX draws inspiration from her Kukaja and Pintupi roots and details her experiences growing up in Whadjuk Noongar Boodja through her lyrics.

As a multi-instrumental artist, passionate songwriter, and co-producer, ICONYX has immersed herself in every part of this album. Beginning the work at 12 years old, Blak On Trak holds sentimental value, being a cornerstone for her creative identity that she wears proudly today.

“Because I started it when I was 12, it’s showing how I’ve grown up,” she remarks.

ICONYX has been working with acclaimed Skinnyfish Music. The independent record label based in Darwin, established by Mark Grose and Michael Hohnen, is dedicated to promoting the work of indigenous musicians.

She explains, “They (Skinnyfish) are amazing; Michael has been amazing through this whole thing. He’s very encouraging, and he’s only a phone call away.”

ICONYX’s connection to the late Archie Roach and Gurrumul remains a significant influence, with both families granting her rare permission to perform and reimagine their music, further solidifying her place in the Australian music landscape.

Gurrumul’s family visited Perth to grant special permission to ICONYX, asking her to keep singing his song Baru, the album’s third track. That ceremonial gathering also results in a song, which makes the second track of the record Special Gift For You (Baru).

ICONYX has already begun to carve out an extraordinary path marked by notable achievements. With three WAM Award nominations and a win in the Act Belong Commit category in 2022 for her track Dawn Of The Future - all backing her brilliance - her career is blossoming. She has built a strong presence in Perth, performing at festivals, NAIDOC events, and prestigious venues like the State Theatre Centre and Crown, most recently opening for Emily Wurramara at the Perth Festival.

“I think we did pretty well, me and my band, we hyped each other up, the energy was really good.” - ICONYX on her performance at East Perth Power station, February 2025.

ICONYX’s combination of culture and innovation has established herself as an influential voice in the Australian music scene. With multiple nominations and multiple shows lined up, the future is hers to shape.

Blak On Track is out now via Skinnyfish Music.
