"It's nice to have a project that we're really proud of."

Perth power trio Ghost Care have returned with new member Emma Joan and a shiny new single, Better Off, which sparks the launch of a new EP and West Australian tour. Lead vocalist Beau Torrance and drummer Luke Del Fante walk us through the evolution of their new music.
Luke: Epic! It’s going to be a big year for us.

Luke: I think mine has just been a continuation of things I want to do instead of resolutions. Read more, exercise more…
Beau: The reception has been great, and heaps of listens. It feels like it's the first time we're gonna do lots of releases for a little while, and it feels like people understand that. So, [there’s] a lot more interest, and it's been going really well. We're feeling really excited.
Luke: We spent ages after Tanaya [Harper] left trying to put everything back together and get the ball rolling again. There's always that worry that it's gonna go the other way.
Beau: It was inspired by my New Year's resolution last year, actually. I'd had a really horrible year the year before and just struggled personally in many ways, and I just made a New Year's resolution, kind of out of nowhere, to be positive and to find positivity in everything that I do and see if that changes things.
I was pretty floored at how quickly it really did change, like every day, just looking at positivity in everything and looking at the bright side because there always is one if you're thankful, I think. Not for everyone in every situation, I can't say that, but you know what I mean?
For a lot of us who are very blessed, there's always something to be thankful for. So, I took that on, and it started to lead my songwriting; not only just trying to be more positive but also looking at my struggles and overcoming them. So that's kind of the theme of it, and for me, you know, I'm in a really healthy relationship, and I know I have a lot of people around me.
Beau: It was difficult at the start, but now we know it's the best thing for today, and [Tanaya’s] really happy with the decision. We're just really glad that we found Emma because she's been awesome to be in a band with, and she’s a really great player as well. So she's slotted in really nicely.
Beau: I'm sure she will in the future, but at the moment, it's mainly just live shows because a lot of the music we're playing or we're going to release has already been written. So in the future, I'm sure she'll be a lot more involved, at least we hope so.
Beau: We’re starting home, and then we’re definitely getting to the East Coast.
Beau: We always play in Albany, and it's always just a fun time. We've got lots of fans that continue to come back, and we're really thankful for that. We love that show and Margaret River… it always just seems to be new people every time, which is totally random. So, hopefully, they all come back to this show.
We’ve never played the venue we’re booked for in Esperance before. So, we’re excited for that. We’ve played Esperance before, but not as our own show.
Luke: And I guess we’re just talking about all of them now, but The Bird is a classic. We haven’t played there in about 2-3 years, so that will be good too.
Beau: We’ve struggled to find venues; Perth doesn’t have the most venues. Speaking of Covid, a couple have shut down. At our level, we don't want to make the jump up to one of these big venues yet.
Beau: I'd say yes and no. We’ve played many gigs down south with other bands like Spacey Jane, and they were pretty rowdy. But for our shows, because we're more of an up-and-coming band, we mostly get fans or a couple of randoms, so it doesn't get too rowdy, but you know, people are thankful that you come, that's for sure. They're just really thankful that you've made the journey, especially to Esperance, that's like a nine-hour drive.
Luke: They love coming up to you and having a chat. They just want to talk to you because you’ve come so far.
Beau: I remember that as well because I grew up in a regional town. I remember seeing the band, and it's just like, ‘Can't believe you're here.’
Beau: We honestly don't have to worry about it. It's usually the students that get old enough and then come to gigs. It’s a funny thing, though. You’ve just gotta be ready to cop some insults from the kids at school, from some jokes on TikTok. It's pretty funny.
Luke: Beau’s good! But I feel like both of us are just posting anything without any idea.
Beau: I don’t think we’re the best to give tips, but if there’s anything, just nothing too polished, just do stuff that’s real to you.
Luke: Yeah, semi-planned.
Beau: People just want to get to know you.
Luke: I do think part of our problem is thinking too much about it.
Beau: But it is a bit of fun. That’s literally what it is.
Luke: Yeah, that’s how you’ve gotta look at it.
Beau: Just have fun with it. It’s fun making these silly little videos.
Beau: Better Off is part of a big EP coming out, and it'll be out this year sometime. We can't tell you how stoked we are to be doing that because, you know, the last year and a bit, we've just released standalone singles, but now it's nice to have a project that we're really proud of, and that's cohesive. I think it's going to be good.
