What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

More RedHook More RedHook

Answered by: Emmy Mack – vocals

Give us a short description of your music: Heavy rock mutated with characteristics of pop, hip hop, metalcore and electronica for the sad and angry girls and boys.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Definitely our dudes and dudettes in The Dead Love and Reliqa! We're also pumped as hell to see Dregg, Wither, TOWNS and Tones & I (if there's even room for us to fit that is!).

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? The RedHook live experience is a pretty uniquely kooky rollercoaster, hurling you from big, loud, aggressive energy to softer, more vulnerable, melodic moments. It's theatrical, sweaty, emotional and chaotic. There's a lot of light and shade to it, which makes it something of an anomaly, particularly in the heavy scene.

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? I think we're slowly seeing genre barriers start to erode as artists continue to experiment with sounds and styles outside of those traditional niches (eg Old Town Road!). There's a lot of cross-pollination, collaboration and innovation happening right now and I think we'll continue to see that into the future. :)

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Playing Download UK and touring Europe, supporting Hands Like Houses around Aus, winning triple j's Download Sydney Unearthed comp and being named Feature Artist, getting two songs on triple j rotation, playing Good Things, and BIGSOUND!

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? Man, I'd love to get some solid pointers on how a heavy band can crack into the sync game. This is boring AF, but some tax advice would also be pretty useful.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? Government overregulation is a massive one in Sydney. The nanny state's lockout laws, alcohol curfew and war on music festivals all present very real barriers to the local music industry thriving and reaching its full potential. But I think (or at least, I hope) we're slowly starting to see things shift.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? Uh, pace yourself and try not to meet any influential people while shitfaced!

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 3 Sep, Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage, 10.50pm; 5 Sep, Crowbar Black, 11.20pm.
