What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.

Give us a short description of your music: My music is folk/rock, focused on lyrics and melodies. I wanted to incorporate as much band as possible while leaving the bare bones of the narratives of each song to come through.

Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? I’ve heard great things about Spacey Jane and Ainsley Farrell. Ainsley and I have started an Instagram friendship – so excited for the real-life version. Also excited to see fellow Victorians Obscura Hail and darvid thor.

Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? I think it’s tricky to ask an artist what sets them apart because we’re all expressing our unique experiences, but my strength is my honesty about being a woman, and, of course, my great band.

What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? I think the industry is starting to listen to women. The support surrounding gender equality in music is a noticeable growing theme, at least in my world. This isn’t really a prediction for musical ‘trends’, but I believe across all genres we will watch the rise in well-deserved female-identifying talent.

In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Supporting Angie McMahon at the Metro for her national tour, 2018. That’s a watershed moment I’m very grateful for. Supporting Freya Josephine Hollick, Ryan Downey, and Didirri are notable moments. These artists work really hard, and I always learn so much. Playing BIGSOUND this year is also a big one.

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? I think I’d like to learn how to talk about myself as a musician professionally better. I don’t typically have trouble chatting to people about them or what they do, but putting myself forward as an artist is a scary concept and something I’m ready to learn.

What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? Mental health in the music industry is a recent significant conversation, however, I think we have further to go to preserve ourselves and promote healthier routines to prevent burnout. More available education around sustaining positive mental health is a pressing issue that I’ve noticed that needs to be addressed.

What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? Emilee South on relieving the pressure of playing at BIGSOUND: “You’re going to play your fucking music no matter what happens.”

When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 3 Sep, Black Bear Lodge, 8.20pm; 4 Sep, Empire Hotel, 10pm.
