ALBUM PREMIERE: Slim Jeffries - Slim Jeffries

Multi-flavoured, ferocious Melburnian outfit Slim Jeffries are getting ready to release their debut album this month after a couple of years of honing their chops among the city's underground music scene and building a dedicated fan base in the process.

The 'weirdo-punks' recorded their seven-track first album in the West Footscray home of drummer Andre Ricardo, with the members handling production on the release to boot. Evident influences from the likes of Rage Against The Machine and early Red Hot Chili Peppers hang thick in the band's eclectic, evocative tunes, which range from the ominous opener, Snake, and dirty anger-rock of Fly Asylum to the oi-punk, anti-racist leanings of Pauline, the restrained, emotive Comeback Kid, the offbeat up-strum of Pirate Song and beyond.

The band's lyrical explorations run the gamut from the mythological to the deeply human, touching on everything from creation legends to overarching "themes of hypocrisy, celebrity, mass media and disenfranchisement" and creating a thoughtful, political picture in the process.

If you enjoy what you hear, you'll be keen to know the five-piece will be launching their self-titled debut at Yah Yah's on 21 January, for a bittersweet show that will also mark the final live performance for seasoned guitarist Nick Renton before he "jet[s] off to Perth to become the next Patch Adams", to quote the band.
