Side Effects gradually reveals itself as a sleek and venomous thriller, cleverly plotted and elegantly directed.

It’s like a Tim Burton film before Tim Burton forgot how to make good films.

It’s compelling stuff, given added texture by the deceiver at the centre of the story offering his account of events, and Layton gives it the morbid appeal of the best true-crime yarns.

Catch it at the cinema? Only if you’re undemanding.

The film takes a formal, measured tone, one that’s appropriate but also compelling, and it makes Lincoln a truly engrossing and stirring story.

The same goes for Silver Linings Playbook, which has an energy that’s messy and exhausting but vibrant, confronting and ultimately touching.
