Chris Familton, Journalist

Chris Familton

I'm a music journalist, publicist and musician. I’ve been writing professionally about music for the last 15 years, with my music blogs Doubtful Sounds and Post To Wire (alt-country/folk) and as a freelancer with The Music (Drum Media) since 2009, Rhythms magazine, FasterLouder and more.

I've been playing bass guitar in bands since the early ‘90s in New Zealand (Thorazine Shuffle) and Australia (The Finalists, Charlie Horse). I currently also work as a music publicist, with artists including Bluebottle Kiss, Halfway, Restless Leg, Alannah Russack.

Album Review: Jane's Addiction - Live In NYC
This release is really a document for the fans but if anyone asks if Jane’s Addiction are a great live band this will provide the answer.

Album Review: Melody Pool - The Hurting Scene
The Hurting Scene is a mature and poised debut album that makes a lasting impression with its poetic and eloquent treatise on love via traditional musical forms and sympathetic instrumental accompaniment.

Album Review: Eleanor Friedberger - Personal Record
There’s barely a weak track here and Friedberger’s ability to sound so direct while still trading in intellectual dissections of human relationships is what makes Personal Record such an engaging and relatable album.

Album Review: Daughn Gibson - Me Moan
The general mood of Me Moan places Gibson in the same realm as Jack Ladder, Kirin J Callinan and John Maus.

Album Review: Mad Season - Above
Their sole album, Above, has been given the deluxe reissue treatment, which amounts to an impressive remastering of the songs, giving them an even wider sonic spectrum and warmth

Live Review: Toy, Glass Towers
Another album under their belt will give Toy more shape, depth and hopefully a little more edge and no doubt a return visit will show us just that.

Album Review: Smith Westerns - Soft Will
What saves the album from becoming a forgettable one is the clever, inquisitive arrangements and confidence the band exudes when dealing with established styles and a nostalgic sonic palette.

Album Review: Kirin J Callinan - Embracism
This is an album that promised much and delivers so much more.

Album Review: Killing Joke - The Singles Collection 1979 - 2012
Listening to 33 tracks in a row is an ambitious and tiring task, but when cherry picked for its highlights this definitive collection shows the diversity and belief the band have always had in their dark and primal rock music.

Album Review: Fat Freddy's Drop - Blackbird
Blackbird is a defining example of rhythm-based musical cross-pollination that sounds perfectly natural in the hands of Fat Freddy’s Drop.

Live Review: Cassandra Wilson
Wilson’s style meant she often allowed her voice to sit back amid the music, acting as another instrument rather than a vocal layered on top.
