Album Review: The Trouble With Templeton - Rookie

The latter is a little more out of place, Like A Kid proving to be the brazen and obnoxious black sheep in complete contrast to the favoured internal delivery of Rookie’s offerings, providing something refreshingly different.

On the back of critical acclaim and awards, Brisbane's The Trouble With Templeton seem to be well on their way to commercial success in the Aussie music scene. As expected, their debut full-length Rookie is a great way to continue their long run of recent success, piling together 12 unique tunes that give fans an array of potential avenues the five-piece could follow for their future material.

Despite TTWT aiming to transcend one specific genre, much of the record appears beautifully soft, I Recorded You, Flowers and Secret Pastures sees band founder and frontman Thomas Calder nailing the bridge between subtle and tender vocals and soaring, elongated top notes. Perhaps the best example of this style is evident in You Are Now, Calder's emotive tone is helpless in a moment of complete clarity that proves the band are comfortable in their own skin, as their bio suggests.

Ballads aside, TTWT also serve some variety in two releases Six Months in a Cast and Like A Kid, the former making it perfectly obvious why it became the breakout single – its effective rolling guitar and keys, layered with the easy sing-a-long chorus steadily and justly made its way into hearts across the nation. The latter is a little more out of place, Like A Kid proving to be the brazen and obnoxious black sheep in complete contrast to the favoured internal delivery of Rookie's offerings, providing something refreshingly different.
