Sporting a vast collection of beards, opening act Chilling Winston proved enough to draw punters away from the serving being handed to the Eagles on the Rosie's screens, and as beautiful a sight as that was, the performance made it worth the while. Loud (a theme of the night), loose and raw, the gruff vocals and thrashing guitars owned enough variety to keep a pretty solid early crowd entertained throughout.
They say mutation breeds evolution, and whilst not mutants, Monuments have made a significant evolution from their early days of confusing moshy pop-punk into a much more well-rounded raw sound whilst still maintaining their initial palette. Still yet to master different dynamics (something both the following acts could give schoolings in), resisting the contrast of the clean/scream vocal combo that has taken the lives of too many bands, the four-piece showed that whilst not there yet, they're on their way to a fresh sound they can call their own.
One of the most reliable acts going round, Grim Fandango followed with their trademark jangly-punk that knows no boundaries, refusing to releases its audience from their hooks. Littering the set early and late with material from 2010's Birthmark Blues, the comprehensive array of tracks covered plenty of new and old, in the process demonstrating the bands mastering of every sound they attempt.
The title 'masters' became ever apparent the second The Smith Street Band opened with Sunshine & Technology, the title track from the fantastic album just released by the Melbournians. One of the most charismatic and enigmatic frontmen going round, Wil Wagner and his cohorts were simply breathtaking from start to finish. Singing tales of suburban existentialism (not the kind your wanker indie friend likes to indulge in), older anthems such as I Ain't Safe and Sigourney Weaver sat astonishingly well amongst newer tracks I Want Friends, Young Drunk and What's Changed. All were sensational. Far from a solo act these days, the contributions of the band are top shelf, demonstrating a knack for catchy song-writing that penetrates your memory and evokes a range of strong nuanced feelings and memories you didn't know existed; and did I mention dynamic? Humble, concerted and unique, if anybody deserves to speak for a generation, it's these guys.
