"[S]uccinct and original."
On first listen, Get The Money – the third offering from Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and his band of Coattail Riders - sounds like Pink Floyd or Queens Of The Stone Age. Upon subsequent listens it becomes apparent that this wacky, energetic and ultimately quite dark collection of tunes is actually both succinct and original.
Rollicking numbers Crossed The Line and Shapes Of Things are sharply contrasted by the Roger Waters-esque Don’t Look At Me That Way and the album's title track, but despite the clear references to influential artists, things are far from predictable. Album highlight Queen Of The Clowns is the best reference point here, channeling the creative thrill of '80s pop pioneers with some straight-up rock'n'roll progressions.
If Fooies fans wonder why contemporary Grohl material leans more in the orchestral, progressive-rock direction, Get The Money is the smoking gun. If anything, one marvels how the musician that can sit back on tracks like Learn To Fly and Times Like These can turn around and pump out epics like C U In Hell and Kiss The Ring.
