"It's the cast that makes this worth a watch."
These days there's a new trend in the film world - the unconventional rom com. It's still a rom com in that it's a love story, where you know the outcome from the beginning (EVERYONE'S GETTING MARRIED, GUYS), but it's got a bit of a twist - it's a story about a pair of people who struggle with monogamy and become friends, talk about masturbation, and pointedly don't fuck each other. Sure, the twisted rom com isn't all that novel anymore (see: Trainwreck), and still reinforces the same rom com tropes (how is it that Alison Brie's character doesn't know about masturbation; why is she dedicated to the man in her life, even if it's not the man she's dating), but it just feels more fun than watching people fall in love and only then be challenged. Love just ain't that easy, and screenwriter and director Leslye Headland shows us as much.
It's the cast that makes this worth a watch. Everyone here has some serious comedy chops, from brief cameos from Adam Brody and Parks And Recreation's Billy Eichner, to great supporting roles for Jason Mantzoukas, Orange Is The New Black's Natasha Lyonne and the hilarious Adam Scott (who shifts out of the role we're more accustomed to seeing him play), to the stars of the feature themselves Brie and Jason Sudeikis. There's a reason they're powerhouses of the comedy scene. They've got an easy charm and chemistry that helps us forget that we might have seen this all before.
