Album Review: Mallrat - In The Sky

"Personal stuff; emotionally available and courageous."

More Mallrat Mallrat

"I'm sorry about your broken heart." It's an opening line that takes more than a little chutzpah. It speaks of deserved confidence, spiked with a little self-deprecation. Some balance to strike and Mallrat does so magically when setting up this EP with beautiful bopper Groceries.

Better is a triumph of optimism. Being a cynic is always the easy option, after all: the coolest thing to do is not to care. Here, Mallrat takes the road less travelled and celebrates the support she finds from those around her. UFO peaks with a disorienting verse from Allday who takes us on a quiet rollercoaster: a swift, haunting bunch of bars that stand as his best work to date. Incidentally, Allday's raps set off Mallrat's otherworldly, layered vocals perfectly.

Divorcing an artist from her art is rarely as difficult as it is with Mallrat. This is personal stuff; emotionally available and courageous. Given the chance, Mallrat seduces listeners with her compelling personality, making the art and the artist inseparable. In this case, that's very good news.
