Live Review: Muki gives a bittersweet reminder that ‘Friends Don’t Make Out’

Sydney pop master MUKI has finally gratified our incessant sugar cravings with the release of her second single, ‘Friends Don’t Make Out’. This latest number comes six long months after she made her music debut with ‘Sassaparilla’ back in March, which quickly infiltrated the Spotify Viral Charts and cast her onto the radar of Australian and international pop fiends alike.

Since taking over the airwaves with her vivacious first offering, Muki has certainly kept up momentum, scoring herself a fanciful support spot on tour with CLIENT LIASON, alongside Total Giovanni, and now set to hit the road again with PACES. Now fresh off the touring line, this new tune is more than enough to fuel the dream train.

‘Friends Don’t Make Out’ is defiantly effervescent and literally bursting with bold and bright flavours. Opening with a fresh serve of potent bubbling pop, this unique track continues the artist's liquescent production style to ooze kaleidoscopic timbres through buoyant synth pads and what can only be described as melodic sugary sprinkles. These sounds bring with them vibrant hues and sweet crunchy textures, harbouring the same ebullience of the delicious confectionary particles.

Second only to this enchanting sonic anomaly is the song's homage to the astounding awkwardness that often transpires from making out with a friend, serving as an abashing reminder of the uncomfortable limbo that has you bouncing off the walls in a way that is equally comparable to pairing Skittles with Creaming Soda in the same sitting.

Muki’s vocals are, au fond, the velvety icing that holds everything together, yielding its own unique sonic flavour that blends the track’s audacious sonic palette with superlative pop sensibilities and ultimately evinces the songwriting abilities of this luminous up-and-comer.

Word on the street is Muki's debut EP will be out in 2018, so hopefully the upcoming silly season will distract us until then.
