Live Review: Breakage ft. Madi Lane 'Future'

James Boyle, aka Breakage, is one of the most respected DJs and producers in the game, having been putting out music for nearly 15 years. His latest album, released through the legendary Digital Soundboy imprint, showcases his expertise when it comes to production.

The album sees a hybrid blend of techno, dupstep and drum n bass. ‘Future’ is the latest track off the album, offering an appropriately apocalyptic turn. ‘Future’ opens with an ominous organ-esque refrain reminiscent of Four Tet, but the introduction of a house-y bop coupled with Madi Lane’s vocals it makes for a more melodic affair than the British producer’s usual drum n bass sound.

This is the latest in a string of surprises from Breakage’s third album ‘When The Night Comes’, which has seen a departure from what might have been classed as his signature sound. First we had the unexpectedly floaty ‘Treading Water’, then the soothingly dubby ‘Revelation’ and now the tense and anxious ‘Future’. The minor piano chords are balanced nicely against an upbeat hook, which at times creates a slightly bittersweet feeling. Don’t be too alarmed though, we’ve still got a good dose of euphoric 4/4 and the female vocals ensure this is a track that’s primed and ready for the dancefloor.

‘Future’ is released on April 26th via Digital Soundboy, with the album following a week later.
