In a world where literally anyone can jump on a computer in a bedroom (myself included) and become a producer, it's honestly really refreshing when a classically trained artist comes out and starts making beats. That's the case for Sydney's ANATOLE.
Trained at the Sydney Conservatorium, Jonathan Baker (aka Anatole) has been taking the knowledge from years of studying music's beginnings and using it to create complex, yet effortless beat-driven tracks. 'Away' is the first cut from a new EP, the follow up to last year's Westbrook EP, and is the strongest we've seen Anatole yet.
With the help of Melbourne's Tash Parker, Baker moulds a woozing and controlled creation considering all of the elements on show. What begins very basic, with Parker's voice almost singled out around sporadic key work - slowly builds around samples of strings and off kilter percussion. The vocals are swept away, and the warmest freaking instrumental verse flows through, with three main lines of synth of strings meshing together for a cinematic experience.
It's the kind of track that wouldn't seem out of place on Bonobo's The North Borders. Exceptionally clean, refined - yet busting at the seams with so many different samples, synths, keys and strings working together for a soulful trip-hop infused cut.
