DJs often strike me as similar to superheroes – behind the mask is just an ordinary person with a bang average name. The man behind the intriguing ADESSE VERSIONS is a dude called Kevin Gorman. I doubt he’s saving any lives or getting rid of baddies, but he is making killer bass lines.
Again, like a superhero, very little is known about Adesse Versions. After a pretty extensive search, it appears he’s done a decent Boiler Room set, is signed to Numbers record label and his Pressured EP was received well when it came out in 2013.
His new release, ‘Pride’, uses a funky house bass line that is strong in its simplicity, offering a structure for the discordant piano, the slow dubby rolls and feisty vocals that pepper the track. Adesse is about raw energy and a ‘cut and paste’ ethos to making house music. Set against a laidback double bass line, the shirty edge comes in with the lyrical delivery and the piercing snares. The anonymous female voice says ‘you refuse to put anything before your pride / What I got will knock all your pride aside’. * Finger snaps *
‘Pride’ comes as part of a three-track EP, which features a dub version of the title track and the Mr Fingers inspired ‘First Time’. Released by Numbers, it’s out now on limited 12” vinyl; having been dropped into sets by Jackmaster and Giles Peterson, listen out for it creeping into more online and dance floor mixes.
