Damien Vosk: Your Average Guy

"It's worth checking out this year, so you can say that you saw him when he started, because he has potential."

Your Average Guy is the debut stand-up show for Melbourne comedian Damien Vosk. Billed as a guy who "overanalyses situations in order to avoid being outed by society", it feels somewhat as though Vosk is overanalysing his repertoire as to not be outed by the crowd. This is not a bad thing, and it actually makes for an interesting vibe.

Vosk's inexperience shows, as he takes a little bit of time to get warmed up, but once he is in the middle of his set you can feel his confidence grow. What Vosk doesn't quite nail is the awkward pauses, which is a shame, because his material begs for it. The audience needed more time to digest the punch line (Adelaide audiences can be a bit mellow, especially on a Monday).

You don't really get to know Vosk until the very end when he starts to run you through some of his real life scenarios. It's character-building at its best and should ultimately begin the show so some of his other jokes, like failed Tinder dates and dumpster salesman work, have more context.

Vosk has potential to grow this set and his confidence, and he can do it by exploring his stories, building his characters within each of those and dwelling on punch lines a little more. It's worth checking out this year, so you can say that you saw him when he started, because he has potential.
