"We're glad to have them back for this awesome homecoming."
Harvey Sutherland is joined by a live band that incorporates violin and drums. Together the trio creates a jazzy, disco-funk sound with mesmerising synths and sublime melodies. Their unique and energetic electronic instrumentals from Sutherland's latest EP Expectations generates some serious heat on the dancefloor.
On the evening before their highly anticipated Splendour In The Grass appearance, Cut Copy finally return to their hometown for a sold-out headline show. "So, Melbourne, it's been a while. We've been making a new album and we're going to play some new stuff for you!" lead singer Dan Whitford tells us before launching into their latest single Airborne. It's their first proper song in three years and it's a surprising tune, unlike anything we've heard from the band previously. The funky tune begins with a psychedelic vibe and then carries us away in a different direction when we least expect it. We then get acquainted with another new song that boasts euphoric tropical sounds and chilled grooves. As Cut Copy jam out with complex layers of live instrumentation, they tease the new sonic territory they continue to explore. This taste of new material gets us excited about what's to come.
The room comes alive when Pharaohs & Pyramids ignites and encourages us to get our dance on as the strobe lights flicker to the pulsating rhythm. The accomplished group take us through their back catalogue of nostalgic anthems that spans more than 13 years. "Does anyone remember the first-ever Cut Copy show in Melbourne?" Whitford asks. A few long-time fans raise their hands as they reminisce with a re-working of an old classic: Future. Hearts On Fire is the set's pinnacle and everyone comes together in a surge of exhilaration, hands in the air and letting loose. As the synth builds higher and higher, Whitford climbs onto an amp and catapults himself off just as the final chorus explodes.
"It's always special to come back to Melbourne, it's the place we originally met and all came together as a band," Whitford declares. "Cut Copy was born out of The Avalanches, Midnight Juggernauts and the alleyways of Honkytonks — we'll never forget where we came from!" We're glad to have them back for this awesome homecoming. As always, Cut Copy's epic live show is transcendent and leaves us feeling on top of the world.
