"Philip Slabber's intimate vocals feel like a whispered coo that have either been wrapped up in soft, sensuous vibes."
Local synth-pop outfit Crooked Colours have quietly been releasing tracks since 2014 and they are finally touching down with their debut long-player.
It feels like it's taken them a long time to get this one in the can but those waiting will soon be rewarded. Vera showcases the trio's ability to write pop songs that have been dressed up in the fizzing whir of dreamy synths and beats that are ready to spin listeners around the dancefloor.
Philip Slabber's intimate vocals feel like a whispered coo that have either been wrapped up in soft, sensuous vibes or pushed around a little by insistent beats. Many of these tracks have that feelgood, euphoric feel. Some seriously slick production leaves the mix sounding big, bright and beautiful. The lads show great restraint focusing on producing pop songs without completely igniting a proper assault on the dancefloor. It's the kind of move that suggests that killer remixes could be on the way.
While a lot of Aussie indie dance and synth-pop has adopted a very particular, if somewhat predictable, sound, Crooked Colours aim for something different — even if, at times, those Alt-J and even Hot Chip comparisons are hard to resist.
