Album Review: Amy Shark - Nelson

Without much guitar support to add colour or vibrancy, Blow It Up’s climax falls flat and feels monotonous.

More Amy Shark More Amy Shark

Displaying some great qualities on her new EP, this quirky singer-songwriter demonstrates her clear pop instincts and knack for tuneful melodies. Shark's brand of indie-pop is reminiscent of The Jezebels, especially when her powerful voice almost yodels in opener I Spit Blood. However without a band with which to compromise, like many solo artists, she succumbs to moments of self-indulgence with forced 'epicness', over-the-top vocal gymnastics and repetitive lyrics and vocal patterns. For example, without much guitar support to add colour or vibrancy, Blow It Up's climax falls flat and feels monotonous.
