Ahead of You Am I’s induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame tonight, they’ve been celebrated by the Australian Music Vault exhibit in Melbourne.
A new display dedicated to the band, featuring iconic posters and archival items including an original media release, and a newspaper clipping from Juke Magazine, plus photos captured by Melbourne-based photographer Laura May Grogan, can be found alongside tributes to Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil, and many others.
Reflecting on the opportunities from across the band’s incredible career, singer Tim Rogers remarked, “Most of them have come from within a music community. Never necessarily a music style, or a scene, just folks who need this music and are compelled, fanatically, to share it around.
“No matter where you exist on the totem pole of the music industry, that community will always be there. This year, last year, ten years ago, 30 damn years ago, it was the same. Thank you to the music community for giving us chances. Despite our rough and worn visage, we’re extremely grateful.”
Australian Music Vault Curator Olivia Jackson added, “One of my earliest musical memories is watching the band perform live on Recovery on a Saturday morning in the late 1990s – I was only eight, but seeing Tim Rogers sing ‘Heavy Heart’ made me feel as though I truly understood heartbreak.

“That is the beauty of You Am I’s music: their songs tell personal stories in a way that feels universal and deeply relatable. Many listeners have shared similar experiences with the band, whose remarkable career spans more than 30 years and 11 studio albums.”
The You Am I display is open to the public. It’s located inside the Australian Music Vault within Arts Centre Melbourne’s Theatres Building. The free exhibition allows music fans to take a trip down memory lane, explore the cultural backdrop of Australia, and come across contemporary works of art.
This morning, You Am I teased their ARIA Hall of Fame induction performance, where they’re set to play a surprise song. They wrote on social media, “Showbiz. We rehearsed a song we haven’t rehearsed since 1993 and have washed our special jocks. Everyone we want to thanks we see all the time so let’s just have a giggle and a large shot of whatevers tasty.”
Fans can watch You Am I’s induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame by tuning into the ARIA Awards tonight. The ceremony will be live-streamed on Paramount+ from 5 pm AEDT, followed by a broadcast on Channel Ten in the evening – the Red Carpet will be broadcast from 7 pm, and the award ceremony will air after Big Brother, from 8:40 pm.
Upon the September announcement that You Am I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame, ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said, “Australia has witnessed You Am I shape the course of modern rock music with their unmistakable sound, honed by live shows across the length and breadth of the country and beyond.
“With 10 ARIA Awards, multiple chart-topping albums, and a legacy that has inspired countless musicians, You Am I is one of the finest live acts this country has produced, fuelled in equal parts by the explosive musical chemistry between the band and Tim Rogers’ era-defining songwriting.”
She added, “It’s the songs that have really sealed the deal on making You Am I a band for the ages. Tim Rogers’ ability to nail a universal feeling with a couple of seemingly throwaway lines, through that uniquely Australian lens, is one of the reasons that You Am I’s music – including ARIA #1s Hi Fi Way, Hourly, Daily and #4 Record, are held so close to fans’ hearts.
“We are thrilled to be welcoming one of Australia’s most influential and enduring bands into the ARIA Hall of Fame.”
