The follow-up to true crime doco ‘Making a Murderer’ follows the American woman accused of killing Meredith Kercher

“Either I am a psychopath in sheep’s clothing, or I am you.” Ok Amanda Knox, you’ve got our attention.

Netflix has just dropped the trailer for its latest true crime docudrama, and it's likely to be as big a ratings draw as Making a Murderer.

Believe Her follows American exchange student Amanda Knox, who was accused of murdering her roommate, British woman Meredith Kercher, aged 21 when she died, at their apartment in the Italian town of Perugia. Kercher was found dead on November 2, 2007, laying on her bed with her throat cut. Knox, her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Ivory Coast drug dealer Rudy Guede, were arrested and charged with the murder. However, the case was far from closed.

What followed was a murder investigation riddled with issues, with Italian authorities heavily criticised for mishandling of evidence and investigative failures. Seedy details of a sexual misadventure that led to the murder spawned a nick-name for the young American woman: “Foxy Knoxy”. The trail saw Knox catapulted into infamy, with the media spinning a reputation for her as a femme fatale.

Knox consistently maintained her innocence, but in 2009 she was convicted, sentenced to 26 years in jail and ordered to pay Kercher’s parents one million Euros each. In 2011, an appeal was granted, only for it to be deemed inadmissible and a retrial ordered in 2013. In January 2014 she was once again convicted of Kercher’s murder, only to be granted a second appeal, with her murder conviction finally quashed in 2015.

The new documentary, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival today ahead of its release on Netflix on September 30, offers a detailed look Knox’s trails, the methods of investigation, and the crucial details and evidence. Given the massive interest in Making a Murderer, we expect this latest true crime doco from Netflix to be an equally gripping watch.
