One of the most-talked about bands in Australian guitar music, Melbourne new-wave/post-punk outfit Radio Free Alice, have taken to the triple j studio for a riff-heavy cover of an Usher classic.

Yep, that’s right, R&B and pop icon Usher. For their Like a Version, the rockers put their own spin on DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love, guitar riffs taking centre stage while frontman Noah Learmonth showed off breathy, energetic vocals.

It’s a surprising song for a rock band to cover, but that only serves to make it more effective. Explaining the reasoning behind the odd song choice, guitarist Jules Paradiso said, “We wanted to pick a song that was very different from Radio Free Alice sonically, and we thought that the 2010s dance-pop era was a good place to start.”

Learmonth added that the band have always felt that “good songs don’t need good covers, it’s bad songs that need good covers.” Describing DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love as the “ugliest duckling of bad songs,” Learmonth stated that the band challenged themselves to turn the track into a “swan.”

While in the triple j studio, Radio Free Alice also performed their most recent single, Rule 31, released in November. You can check out the performances below.

Following the release of Rule 31, the band returned to Australia to perform at Meredith Music Festival and headline a show at Sydney’s Liberty Hall in December, and in February, came back home once again as special guests for Geese on their sold-out Australian dates.

Radio Free Alice have developed a reputation as a must-see live band, especially on the international circuit. After making their UK debut in 2023 – performing in underground venues – the band returned in 2025 to an incredible reception.

The band sold out six headline shows in London alone, with one fan sporting a Radio Free Alice tattoo across their torso.

The hugely successful London shows caught the attention of Reading and Leeds Festival organisers, who had booked the band a few weeks before for their events. Radio Free Alice then sold out shows across the US before again returning to an ecstatic reception in the UK.
