This One Time, On Bandcamp: Dying Adolescence

Ease into some lush lo-fi retro-pop from a bedroom somewhere in Sydney

How'd you like those goodies from The Football Club last week? Pretty damn solid, right? Yeah, they were.

Don't worry — we're not about to let the quality drop now, not when we've just got our groove back, resilient Stellas that we are.

To help keep the bar raised nice and high, we're turning our attention to an intelligent and introspective young songwriter out of Sydney, by the name of Michael Barker — also known as Dying Adolescence.

Dying Adolescence — Sydney, NSW

We've never been shy about our love of some good, old-fashioned lo-fi bedroom pop, and Dying Adolescence is the exact sort of musician who ticks our boxes. Catchy, easy-listening riffs? Check. Danceable, driven beats? Check. Emotionally unedited lyricism? Hell check.

Sure, it can all read a bit overtly teenage in its intent and execution, especially the further removed from high-school age the listener is — but then again, that just makes it all the more likely you'll find it infused with a strong sense of nostalgia for more innocent days, filled with social and emotional confusion and terror. People just out of school will undoubtedly find it nostalgic too, just for very different reasons, because young people and people who are old(er, thanks) are diametric adversaries and destined to mutually destroy each other in a final battle for supremacy.

Either way, it's some really good stuff.

"They" say you should write what you know, which is arguable advice in general but nonetheless frequently beneficial; here, it works beautifully to Dying Adolescence's advantage, his post-pubescent vocals an apt match to his ruminations about love, life, friendship, death and everything else that tends to flock to the mind of those freshly thrust into the churn of the world.

He reared his head in October last year with End Of High School, which is exactly what you'd expect based on everything we've been talking about, and ended up opening his February 2016 album, Dear You, It Can't Wait., with the track. The wider album delivers a delightful 10-track set list of heartfelt, home-built jams, and comes highly recommended.

So, what's next? Well, he recently dropped a cover of Porches' Forgive featuring Mara, and has teased the release of upcoming work одинокий (Lonely), set to be revealed next month.

Give his existing goodies a spin below and keep on top of Dying Adolescence's future movements and releases at his Facebook page.
