"I'm counting down the days to what will be a really memorable evening," says The Whitlams' Tim Freedman.

After more than three decades as one of Australia’s most revered bands, The Whitlams are treating themselves to a night out at the symphony, announcing a special one-off performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Set to take place at Naarm/Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on Saturday, September 6th, the retrospective show will see the MSO share centre stage with The Whitlams, offering up a wide palate of styles across the career-spanning set.
While frontman Tim Freedman's friendship with the late Peter Sculthorpe is marked by two gorgeous string arrangements, full symphonic treatments have been provided by MSO Principal Conductor Benjamin Northey, Brett Dean, Iain Grandage, Daniel Denholm, Jamie Messenger, and Nicholas Buc, who serves as the conductor of the upcoming performance.
For longtime fans of The Whitlams, it’s no secret that the band are fond of giving their work an orchestral reworking. In 2004, they became the first Australian indie band to perform with the country’s finest orchestras, and since then, they’ve made sure to revisit the concept from time to time.
The band’s last three visits to Melbourne have been sellout standing shows at The Forum, The Northcote Theatre, and a four-night run at The Corner Hotel, though upcoming performance will be their first seated concert since their 25th anniversary tour in 2017, where they also performed at Hamer Hall with the MSO.
"Once every seven years we get to perform in the middle of the beautiful storm of an 80-piece orchestra,” Freedman explains. “This time it's with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia's best sounding room, Hamer Hall. I'm counting down the days to what will be a really memorable evening."
