Skivvies are well and truly back, with veteran Naarm/Melbourne rockers The Sharp announcing their long-awaited musical comeback by way of their new EP, 4.
For those who remember the Melbourne music scene of the ‘90s, it was hard to ignore The Sharp. Formed in Collingwood in 1990 and initially active for just five years, the three-piece group were a staple of local live venues, with their pop-infused rockabilly sound setting them apart from their contemporaries at the time.
Debuting with 1992's Spinosity EP, the group hit #13 on the Aussie charts the next year with debut album This Is The Sharp. Tracks like Train Of Thought, Yeah I Want You, and Scratch My Back became chart hits, with the latter even appearing in triple j's first Hottest 100 countdown.
Returning with Sonic Tripod the following year, they hit the ARIA top 20 thanks to singles such as Alone Like Me, before waving goodbye in 1995 with their fittingly-titled Thank You Good Night EP.
Alongside four nominations at the ARIA Awards, the group even found themselves parodied on the ABC’s The Late Show, with Skivvies Are Back helping to place the group in front of a wider audience.
After a few reunions over the years, The Sharp again announced a reunion, though double bassist and vocalist Allan Catlin wasn’t involved for personal reasons. Instead, the trio is now a quartet, with Scott Owen of The Living End and vocalist Louie Lee Feltrin rounding out the current lineup.
