Taylor Swift seeks to trademark her voice and likeness to protect her image and career in the age of AI and deep fakes.

Last Friday (24 April), filings were made on behalf of the singer’s TAS Rights Management. The company filed three trademark applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office, sharing two sound bites to protect her voice and a visual image associated with Swift.

Variety reports that TAS Rights Management seeks to trademark the Cruel Summer hitmaker, saying “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift” and “Hey, it’s Taylor.” Meanwhile, the image showcases Swift holding a pink guitar and performing while wearing a “multi-coloured iridescent bodysuit with silver boots.”

The image finds her standing on a pink stage before a “multi-coloured microphone with purple lights in the background,” similar to the picture you can see above.

Swift has previously been targeted in malicious AI-generated images and deepfakes, all of which circulated without her consent. She’s been the subject of AI chatbots on Meta, pornographic images, and, in the lead-up to the 2024 US Presidential Election, Donald Trump shared AI-generated pictures of Swift seemingly supporting him as a presidential candidate.

Swift’s trademark filings arrive after actor Matthew McConaughey was granted eight trademarks to protect his voice and likeness last year. Among the trademarks for the actor is a clip of his iconic catchphrase, “Alright, alright, alright!”

Earlier this year, it was announced that Taylor Swift will be inducted into this year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame alongside KISSPaul Stanley and Gene Simmons, Footloose hitmaker Kenny Loggins, You Oughta Know star Alanis Morissette, and others.

With her impending induction, Taylor Swift, at age 36, is the second-youngest songwriter to receive the honour, joining Stevie Wonder, who was 33 when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.

Swift’s latest album, The Life Of A Showgirl – her twelfth album – was released in October 2025.
