Snoop Dogg has once again caused a stir after sharing criticism of LGBTQIA+ representation in films, saying he’s “scared to go to the movies” because “they’re putting it everywhere.”

In a recent episode of the It’s Giving podcast, the Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper recalled taking his grandson to see the 2022 film Lightyear, which features two mothers parenting the movie’s protagonist. Upon seeing the film, he remarked that LGBTQIA+ representation is being put “everywhere.”

He began, “They’re like, ‘She had a baby with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”

The rapper remembered thinking, “Oh shit, I didn’t come in for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”

His grandson then continued asking how the couple had a baby, to which Snoop Dogg recalled that the experience “fucked” him up. He continued, “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.”

He added, “It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’… These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Snoop Dogg’s comments come as the AFL reckons with issues surrounding homophobia within its culture, criticism that only grew upon the announcement that the rapper would headline this year’s Grand Final pre-game entertainment.

The Music has reached out to the AFL following Snoop Dogg’s recent comments.

The AFL recently handed Adelaide Crows player Izak Rankine a four-week suspension for using a homophobic slur on the field against a Collingwood Magpies player, and the organisation has since received criticism for its alleged hypocrisy around its stance towards homophobia. Rankine is the sixth player in the past two seasons to be suspended for the use of a homophobic slur on the field.

Last week, AFL CEO Andrew Dillon defended the decision to have Snoop Dogg headline this year’s pre-game entertainment, despite media attention being drawn to the rapper’s past misogynistic and homophobic lyrics.

“We cannot vouch for every lyric in every song ever written or performed by any artist who has appeared on our stage — Australian or international,” Dillon said.

“What I can say is that our pre-match entertainment on AFL Grand Final day will be family-friendly and consistent with the audience at the MCG and those watching the broadcast.

“It is also important to remember that we engaged Snoop Dogg in 2025 as the person he is today.”

Dillon added, “He has spoken publicly about his past, he has changed, and today he is a grandfather, philanthropist, he helps rehabilitate youth and is a global entertainer who has performed at both the Super Bowl and the Olympic Closing Ceremony to audiences of more than 100 million people.

“In those environments, his performance was appropriate and well-received, and his performance this year at our Grand Final will be fitting for the best sporting event in the country.”
