Power Rangers Reboot Movie Announced

Lionsgate and Saban to bring '90s afternoon viewing into the 21st century

More than 20 years after they first appeared in our living rooms, the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers are set to return to the big screen with a brand new film rebooting the popular '90s franchise.

Film studio Lionsgate has announced that it is partnering with Saban Brands (and therefore Haim Saban, the creator of the Power Rangers) to bring the most iconic of the Power Rangers' many incarnations back to life.

“We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximise the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognised franchise,” Lionsgate chief executive Jon Feltheimer said in a statement.

“The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.”

Since its inception, the Power Rangers franchise has included several TV shows, a major live-action film, toys, video games, clothing, you name it – it's got their faces on it.

Of course, children today would be more familiar with other incarnations of the intergalactic karate kids, such as Power Rangers Samurai or Super Samurai or Megaforce or Super Megaforce (you see the pattern), but for anyone who spent their salad days alongside the original quintet of Jason (Red), Kimberley (Pink), Trini (Yellow), Zack (Black) and Billy (Blue) – as well as the later addition of Green/White Ranger Tommy – this is exciting news.

Lionsgate is no stranger to film franchises, having already been responsible for launching The Hunger Games, Twilight and Divergent movie series.

“In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own,” Saban said in a statement.

According to the companies, the reboot will once again introduce the founding Rangers as a group of high-schoolers who are “infused with unique and cool super powers” that they must master while learning to work together to save the world.

Pretty standard stuff, then – but with the advances in CGI we've seen over the past decade (let alone the 19 years since the original film was released), the prospect of updated, realistic Zord battles is suddenly a matter of “just ask the folks from Pacific Rim what they did” and they can't go wrong.

Now we just need a timely, environmentally charged and gritty Captain Planet reboot (you're welcome, studios) and the '90s kids' show trifecta (along with the Ninja Turtles) will be complete. Bodacious.
