RuelThe Music chooses one song every week as its Power Pick, shining a light on ONE Aussie song that we think has the potential to be the next big Australian chart hit.
Our Power Pick committee consists of Richard Kingsmill (consultant and former triple j Group Music Director), Maddy Rowe (Nova nights announcer), Nic Kelly (Hit Network nights announcer), Ash McGregor (host of Listen Up with Ash McGregor), Kent “Smallzy” Small (Host of ‘The Smallzy Show’ on the Kiis Network), Irene Hulme (radio consultant and host of Game Changers Radio podcast) and Ollie Wards (ex-Head of Music for TikTok Australia).
If there’s one thing that Australian music fans have learned to rely on over the past decade, it’s new, high-quality music from none other than Ruel.
Having first launched his music career back in 2017 as a 14-year old, the young musician has achieved more than most artists could ever dream of, issuing myriad singles and EPs, attracting countless accolades along the way.
Releasing his second album, Kicking & Screaming, back in October, Ruel has now announced the forthcoming arrival of Kicking My Feet & Screaming, which serves as the second part of his recent record.
Set to drop on June 12th, he’s now shared Don’t Say That as the record’s lead track. Co-written with Joel Little and Sean Douglas, it’s a powerful cut which leans on an element visceral vulnerability, capturing the painful truth of watching a partner drift away while sensing the relationship slipping.

“At the start of writing DST, I felt like it wasn’t right/ready for Kicking My Feet,” says Ruel. “But as Joel, Sean, and I continued to revisit and develop it, my brain completely switched sides and now, honestly, it’s one of my favourite songs that I’ve written.
“Of course, M-Phazes stepped in to add the extra bite it needed. Where we ended up with the song felt like it was the perfect way to set up the new chapter. And now here we are... releasing it as the first track off the new album!”

Genesis Owusu rises up to No. 45 with Stampede, while Chloe Parche's Silver Bullet drops to a respectable No. 47, followed by previous Power Pick, FISHER's Rain at No. 48. Meanwhile, MAY-A closes out the top 50 with Claws.
