The Music chooses one song every week as its Power Pick, shining a light on ONE Aussie song that we think has the potential to be the next big Australian chart hit.

Our Power Pick committee consists of Richard Kingsmill (consultant and former triple j Group Music Director), Maddy Rowe (Nova nights announcer), Nic Kelly (Hit Network nights announcer), Ash McGregor (host of Listen Up with Ash McGregor), Kent “Smallzy” Small (Host of ‘The Smallzy Show’ on the Kiis Network), Irene Hulme (radio consultant and host of Game Changers Radio podcast) and Ollie Wards (ex-Head of Music for TikTok Australia).

When it comes to Australian music over the past decade, one name that has been pretty much inescapable is FISHER. The musical moniker of former surfer-turned-ravelord Paul Fisher, regular new tunes from the Queensland native is as reliable as high temperatures in January.

Having delivered classic cuts in recent years such as Losing It, You Little Beauty, Atmosphere, and Stay (the latter of which gave him his eighth consecutive annual appearance in triple j’s recent Hottest 100 countdown), FISHER is one musician you can’t keep down, and now he’s just dropped his first track of the new year by way of the euphoric Rain.

A high energy dancefloor filler, Rain is classic FISHER – from the driving, thumping beat, to the soulful vocals and triumphant synth line that washes over you like refreshing summer rain.

The very definition of a fresh cut, Rain only arrived on Friday, February 6th, but it’s already gaining plenty of traction, and was just today added to full rotation over on triple j.

Power Pick Panel member and Hit Network nights announcer Nic Kelly said: “One of dance music’s biggest names, a song designed to extend our summer just that little bit longer, a belter that’s as club ready as it is a radio pick me up with a brilliant pop topline? No question this will be a smash.”

PREVIOUS POWER PICKS

We’ve seen an impressive run from the artists featured in our previous Power Picks in the recent weeks and months, with plenty doing impressive numbers not just on streaming and commercial radio, but the charts as well.

Currently, the Radio Monitor Hot 100 shows there’s a fair representation of local cuts in the chart, with Sonny Fodera, D.O.D & Poppy Baskcomb’s Think About Us sitting at a respectable #7 – just three spots higher than Tame Impala’s Dracula, which is at its peak showing of #10.

Yes Boone’s All I Really Want is found at #14, while Keli Holiday’s anthemic Dancing2 has fallen down to #26. Meanwhile, The Kid LAROI’s Lither-featuring RATHER BE sits at a peak placing of #30, while CYRIL & Maryjo’s Still Into You has risen from the half-ton to #38.

The remainder of the top 50 sees The Kid LAROI hitting #30 with A PERFECT WORLD, while two new entries can be found closely after – including May-A’s Catching Up 2 U and Peach PRC’s Back To You at #42 and 47, respectively.
