"Might see some of you at the Gabba Oct 24 but we will just have a beer and a pie in hand not guitars."

More Powderfinger More Powderfinger

Powderfinger have addressed rumours that they'll perform at next month's AFL grand final, saying they won't be taking the gig.

Taking to social media this week, the Aussie legends confirmed the offer was put on the table but they would rather The Gabba performance go to "active" Queensland acts.

"We were extremely flattered to have been asked to perform at the Gabba AFL GF. A very generous and enticing proposal made by [Michael] Gudinski and the AFL board (thanks ladies & gents) but it is not to be this time folks," the post reads.

"We’d rather make way for active Queensland artists."

Powderfinger have since started curating a list of Queensland bands and artists who could take on the gig, including Amy Shark, Violent Soho, DZ Deathrays, Cub Sport and Thelma Plum.

Speaking to The Music last week, Gudinski said he is still “waiting for instructions” when it comes to booking the Grand Final entertainment.

The news comes only days after the band announced that a new album of previously unreleased songs is on the way, with first single, Day By Day, due out on 18 September.
