Melbourne's “bogan funk” outfit Playlunch has shared a new video on Instagram that will surely appeal to a cross-section of music lovers and TV viewers, dropping a Kath & Kim-inspired track called Hornbag.

“Nice, different, unusual,” the band wrote in their caption on Instagram. On Friday, 9 August, Playlunch will play one of their famous late-night sessions – comprising two back-to-back sets from 11 pm at The Night Cat in Fitzroy.

To accompany the late-night concert announcement, Playlunch’s video began: “We wrote a love song about Kath Day-Knight to see if anyone would pick up on it” before launching into the song.

The first verse of Hornbag is so Aussie and mentions the Kath & Kim house in Fountain Lakes. The verse goes: “Hornbag at 12 o'clock/ Red Bull vodka please/ She's drinking Chardonnay/ With her new TAFE degree/ Witchery jacket with a cigarette and a rake/ She ain't no killer, she's the queen of Fountain Lakes”.

Hornbag follows the release of the band’s single Soupe Opera, which is about watching daytime TV in the early 2000s. In particular, it references Judge Judy.

While the music video for Hornbag has been on YouTube for two weeks now, it’s officially on Spotify. You can check out the music video below. You can also find the lyrics on Genius.

In other Playlunch news, the band will be BIGSOUND bound this September, and they’ll bring in the new year at the NYE On The Hill festival from Monday, 30 December, to Wednesday, 1 January.

Playlunch are on a bill alongside Mallrat, The Dreggs, Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers, Elsy Wameyo, Jem Cassar-Daley, Ninajirachi, South Summit, The Belair Lip Bombs, Ixaras, and more.

This year, buses will also run from Melbourne to the festival’s “The Farm” location for the first time. Festival organisers note that previous editions of the event have sold out well in advance and advise punters to score tickets ASAP, which you can do here.
