Heavy metal music icon Ozzy Osbourne passed away on 22 July – just seventeen days after taking to the stage for the final time at Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning farewell concert in the band’s home of Birmingham.
Osbourne’s passing didn’t just shake the nation of the UK; the news also rippled and touched numerous musicians across the globe. Metallica, Oasis, Yungblud, Evanescence, Judas Priest, Fall Out Boy, Halestorm, Elton John, and many others have recently paid tribute to the Prince of Darkness.
When Osbourne’s family confirmed the singer had passed, they didn’t provide a cause of death, though Osbourne’s health battles in recent years, including with Parkinson’s Disease, were well-documented. He died aged 76.
Upon announcing Osbourne’s passing, his family wrote in a statement, “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family's privacy at this time.”
The cause of Ozzy Osbourne’s death was confirmed this week. According to a death certificate that was filed by his daughter, Aimée Osbourne, and obtained by The Sun and The New York Times on Tuesday (5 August), Osbourne died following a heart attack.
Osbourne’s death certificate stated that the official cause of death was “(a) Out of hospital cardiac arrest (b) Acute myocardial infarction (c) Coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction (Joint Causes).”

While Osbourne’s family were set to hold a private funeral to farewell the singer, the City of Birmingham honoured him with a public procession on 30 July.
On the day, a hearse and accompanying vehicles made their way down Broad Street to Black Sabbath bridge and bench, where fans had been paying tribute since Osbourne’s passing last month.
The hearse and vehicles were accompanied by a live brass band – local musicians in Bostin’ Brass provided a musical moment to honour Osbourne.
