David Bowie's new single Where Are We Now? has missed out on the top 50 in the ARIA Singles Chart this week, despite being released in time to be considered for this week's charts.

The track was released last week on iTunes and should have featured this week based on the musical legend's reputation alone. In the UK the track debuted at six (his first top ten there in two decades), but the only new entries in Australia were Neon Trees' Everybody Talks (40), Rihanna and Mikky Ekko's Stay (43), Anna Kendrick's Cups (48) and Ricki-Lee's Burn It Down (49).

A spokesperson from ARIA confirmed that the track was eligible, but that it had not been registered with ARIA and therefore was not included in the list.

The track is, however, expected to chart strongly in next week's Singles Chart considering the strength of the album pre-sales through iTunes. It is unclear if the decision to omit the track from this week's chart was a deliberate move by label Sony.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz's Thrift Shop retained top spot with will.i.am feat. Britney Spears' Scream & Shout at two.

As was predicted last week, Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox hit the summit of the ARIA Albums Chart for the first time with Les Miserable's soundtrack – featuring Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman – rising to third. The only Aussie artist in the top ten is Guy Sebastian at five with Armageddon, while Flume bulleted from 21 to 14.

Bluesfest-bound The Lumineers enjoyed a boost for their single with Ho Hey jumping up to four (from 12) in the ARIA Singles Chart, while it also dragged their album up to 23 in its second week in the charts.
