Legendary pop icon Cyndi Lauper is in town for a major 6-city tour marked as her bittersweet, official Farewell Tour. While she’s around, the artist is refusing to leave a single stone unturned, inviting Sydney singer-songwriter MAY-A onstage with her at last night’s Qudos Bank Arena show to sing her hit track Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
Lauper announced the Australian leg of her Farewell Tour in October last year, also announcing with it that special guests, The Veronicas, would be joining her.
She kicked things off in Melbourne at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday April 2nd, which The Music writer Cyclone Wehner described as a celebration of “the power of imagination, empathy and collective memory”, a bittersweet nod to the artist’s longstanding music career.
Since then, she has played the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday April 5th and Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Monday April 7th, with shows slated for Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Thursday April 10th and finishing off in Perth at the RAC Arena on Saturday April 12th.
It was clear from the beginning that the Farewell Tour would entail an exciting new experience for fans old and new, calling on Aussie music icons like Tones And I (who was a surprise guest for the Melbourne show) to join Lauper onstage for a song. In Sydney, indie pop singer-songwriter MAY-A was handed over the reins, sharing a stage with Lauper to perform her revolutionary hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

MAY-A has made some impressive milestones since releasing her debut EP, Don’t Kiss Ur Friends, in 2021. Over the years, she’s collaborated with artists like DMAs, Budjerah, Flume – whom she shares a triple j Hottest 100 win with for their track Say Nothing.
MAY-A has also taken her slick discography of vulnerable indie pop to some of the world’s biggest stages, including Coachella and Gov Ball. She’s opened and played alongside Flume in the US and Australia, opened for 5 Seconds Of Summer on their Australian tour, and for Wallows in the UK and Europe.
Her sophomore 2023 EP, Analysis Paralysis, sees MAY-A constantly strive for experimentation and elevation in sound and storytelling, with tracks like Sweat You Out My System and Your Funeral detailing a new era for the artist. While MAY-A has already made a deep-rooted imprint on Australian music, singing a major 80s hit about female liberation, freedom, and girlhood with one of the world’s greatest musicians is truly a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity.
