Lola Young has opened up about seeking help for addiction after she collapsed on stage last year.

In September, the Messy hitmaker collapsed on stage at the All Things Go festival in New York and cancelled her second planned performance at the event.

Young was performing her song Conceited when she was seen falling backwards and collapsing on stage, according to video footage recorded by fans. The singer’s team rushed on stage to help her.

Following the incident, Young addressed her fans on social media. “For anyone who saw my set at All Things Go today, I am doing okay now,” she wrote. “Thank you for all of your support.”

Days later, the singer cancelled all shows “for the foreseeable future,” taking some time away from the spotlight so she could “come back stronger.”

Now, in a new Rolling Stone cover story interview, Young expressed gratitude for reaching that breaking point and for having the motivation to seek help, including checking into a holistic recovery centre and attending AA meetings.

“There was a bunch of hate, but you know what? Fuck it,” Young told Rolling Stone.

“When you’re doing something, there’s always going to be a couple motherfuckers talking shit. But at the same time, it was a decision, like I said, that I had to make, and it was sad that I had to do that. What else was I going to do, die? That was the reality of where my addiction was heading.”

She added, “I am very grateful that it happened because it was, what do you call that? Like, a breaking point which allowed me to then be able to be here today, allowed me to be better for my fans, better for the future, and better for myself.”

In the interview, Young pointed to her songs D£aler and Not Like That Anymore, which track her experiences with self-sabotage and addiction.

“I’m just writing what I’m feeling, and then I’ll realise later, ‘Oh, fuck. I shouldn’t have said that I’m a raging drug addict,’” she explained. “Then I’m like, ‘You know what? I am. What the fuck am I trying to hide?’”

After taking a break from the stage, Young returned with a soul-baring, piano-led performance of Messy at this year’s Grammy Awards. She ended up taking home the award for Best Pop Solo Performance with the single.
