Lana Del Rey Hits Back At Guardian's 'Deathwish' Claims

The sultry singer has a bone to pick with the internet

More Lana Del Rey Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is unimpressed today. Yes, we know, that doesn't seem overly surprising, given the press that the West Coast singer has received of late, particularly that nasty "I wish I was dead" business that has been floating around -- but she has pretty good reason to be upset.

If you missed it, the web was set alight last week when The Guardian published an article claiming that Del Rey had had a gutful of all this "being alive" malarky, and would just as soon not be breathing as being a world-renowned pop star. As it happens, that quote and article -- and the ensuing media storm that followed its publication -- are exactly what Del Rey has taken issue with.

In a series of since-removed tweets this morning (Australian time), Del Rey indicated that she feels misrepresented by the story, which originally appeared in The Guardian, and said that she was filled with "regret" over putting her trust in the publication.

"Alexis [Petridis] was masked as a fan ... but was hiding sinister ambitions and angles," the singer tweeted. "Maybe he's actually the boring one looking for something interesting to write about."

It should be noted that, while Petridis was indeed The Guardian's reviewer for Del Rey's recent Ultraviolence LP, reporter Tim Jonze actually wrote the offending piece.

Potential misidentification aside, despite Del Rey's deletion efforts, transcriptions on the original tweets -- with their now-defunct but evidentiary status links -- live on, because the internet misses nothing.

As handily preserved by Idolator:

i regret trusting the guardian- i didn't want to do an interview but the journalist was persistent. Alexis was masked as a fan

His leading questions about death and persona were calculated.

So, despite what Jonze wants you to think, it would seem that Del Rey feels she was cornered into painting the grim portrait of herself projected in the original article, and isn't actually as ready to shuffle off the mortal coil as some of you might have hoped (you monsters).

Besides, it's not like she doesn't have plenty of good reasons to keep soldiering on -- not least of which includes the fact that she's looking to pull out a dominant chart performance come the end of the week.

Ultraviolence is out now. Check out the album trailer and brand new vid for single Shades Of Cool, below, and rest easy in the knowledge that you're unlikely to wake up to any incredibly depressing news from the Del Rey estate any time soon.
